Find A 3D Printer
Often ideas for new businesses come about in strange ways. Makexyz's idea for finding a 3D printing service on your door step was no exception.

Talking Nathan, a founder of makexyz the other day, I came across the story of how his business came about.

Nathan was designing a light switch cover with a hook on the bottom – so that he could walk in the door, turn on the lights, and leave his keys on the hook. But his 3D printer was in flames and completely out of action. So he sent the design to a service bureau. It took 4 weeks to get the part back. Being fed up about that even though it seems like quite a trivial item, an idea started to dawn on him. In fact the special light switch was a very useful thing to have and other people must have had similar experiences to him.

In Nathan’s words:

“It was frustrating at the very least, in that there was certainly someone with a makerbot nearby, probably even in one of our apartment buildings, we just didn’t know who or where they were.”

The Eureka moment then came as the lights went on – excuse the pun. And my next one.

So from the light came makexyz.com, linking people who need something made with 3D printers nearby.

Since then, the goal has been to help people make stuff and of course deciding which way to take the service and the company. As Nathan says,

“We only do things which we think will help people make stuff – whatever the project, makexyz should make it easier. That’s what we’re in this for: light switch covers –> makexyz –> your awesome project that no one’s even heard about yet.”

For makexyz it is all about linking people who need something made with 3D printers and designers nearby. Try makexyz out by clicking below:
